Schools

We oppose any Voucher System which would provide public funds for use in private or parochial schools. The foundation of a pluralistic democratic republic is the free and public education of all of its citizens.

The League supports adequate and equitable funding for all levels of public education. The League of Women Voters, in its national, state and local efforts, is committed to a continuing effort to establish excellence in all our children's schools. The identification of the essential features in any legislation to establish charter schools is based on that commitment. Any attempt to change the NRS regarding education must keep these priorities in mind: constitutionality, fiscal, equal access, transportation and accountability.

Planning & Zoning

We maintain support of practices and procedures which will insure high quality planning and zoning throughout the Las Vegas Valley, and development of the area as a desirable place in which to live, work, play
and visit - with emphasis on:

  >  Inter-governmental coordination of goals
Consideration of aesthetics and convenience factors
  >  True reflection of public wishes

Environmental Quality

A healthy community is dependent upon having a healthy environment. We support compliance with federal EPA standards. Because air, water and land pollution abatement involve inter-related problems, there must be a coordinated approach to the pollution control.

Solid Waste

We encourage more recycling from both residential and commercial entities.

Hazardous, Toxic Materials & Substances

We support the identification, control and appropriate disposal of toxic materials and substances which are harmful to health.

Air

We support control of automotive emissions, industrial emissions and emissions caused by improper construction site practices.

Water

We support the concept of total water management to achieve water quality essential to humans and diverse species including water resources, flood control and waste water control to significantly limit critical water issues from arising in the future.

Parks & Recreation

We maintain support of a balanced program of public parks and recreation in Clark County with emphasis on strengthening the intergovernmental leadership in this field and developing a countrywide master plan including the following:

  >  Inter-governmental cooperation and coordination with clearly
       defined roles
Exploration of all avenues of financing with a system of
       priorities
Citizen participation in all phases of planning and
        implementation

Consolidation

We support consolidation of local government in Las Vegas Valley. The consolidation of county and urban services will result in more efficient and effective programs for the entire Valley.

Transportation

We support the following statements:
  >  Transportation issues must be part of comprehensive regional
planning and must weigh all social, environmental and
       economic costs and benefits.
  >  Continuous citizen participation must be built into the planning,
development, implementation and evaluation of transportation
       systems.
